Trial Team Wins William W. Daniel National Invitational Mock Trial Competition

November 24, 2008

A team from William & Mary Law School was named national champions at the William W. Daniel National Invitational Mock Trial Competition, sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia on Nov. 21 through Nov. 23, 2008, in Atlanta. The winning team consisted of Heather Stangle '09, Ken Abrams '09, David Tyler '09 , and Hunter Allen '10.

The semi-final and final rounds were won by Stangle and Abrams, who represented the Prosecution, along with Tyler and Allen, who played witness roles. In earlier rounds, Tyler and Allen served as attorneys for the team on the Defense side.

The team won each of its five rounds, ultimately beating South Texas College of Law in the final round to win the competition. Additionally, Tyler was named the "Best Advocate" in the competition.

The William W. Daniel National Invitational Mock Trial Competition is held annually and attracts teams from law schools across the country. Every summer, the Competition Committee sends hundreds of applications to ABA-accredited law schools. Only 18 schools are ultimately selected to compete in the competition, which is named in honor of the late Judge William W. Daniel of the Superior Court of Fulton County. Teams prepare both Prosecution and Defense cases for a criminal trial problem and have an opportunity to present arguments as attorneys and witnesses for both sides. Semi-final and final rounds are judged by superior court judges.

Jeff Breit, Coach of National Trial Team, honored as outstanding professor as recipient of William & Mary's St. George Tucker Adjunct Professorship Award

September, 2008

Jeffrey Breit, partner at Breit Drescher & Imprevento and adjunct professor of law at the College of William and Mary, is the 2008-2009 recipient of the St. George Tucker Adjunct Professorship Award. The award, first presented in 1995, is given each year to a member of the Law School adjunct faculty and is selected by nomination from the Law School community for outstanding service. Over the last 4 years, Breit has served as a Professor of Law and Coach of the Trial Team. He also helped develop a new voluntary clinic within the law school called Parents Engaged for Learning Equality (PELE). The program provides free legal representation for families of disabled children to present their cases to public schools in order to receive the financial assistance they are entitled to under federal and state laws.

"It is such an honor to be recognized for such a prestigious award by my colleagues," said Breit. "It was when I was in college working with a federal court judge in New Orleans that I realized my passion for the law. I hope my students are equally inspired by what they learn here at one of the best law schools in the country, and look to us to help them to grow in their professions even beyond school."

The St. George Tucker award was presented to Breit by Interim Dean Lynda Butler during a luncheon at the college's historic Wren Building on September 2.
